Introduction
Margaret McMillan Nursery School opened officially in March 1991 with the amalgamation of Highgate Nursery School and the Hornsey Rise Children's Day Centre. As part of Islington's plans to extend and integrate services for young children and their families, the school offers nursery education to around 200 children.
The school is open extended hours and for 48 weeks of the year. About half of the children are able to have day-care on site as well as the usual nursery class place.
Situated at the north end of Islington, the school serves a community which benefits from a very wide social, racial and ethnic mix. Typically more than twenty languages are spoken by families using the school and a wide cultural diversity is shared and enjoyed. The school is committed to working closely with parents to provide the best opportunities for the children. There are regular Parents' Evenings, Parent workshops and social events.
In January 1993 additional provision was made for children with a wide range of special needs, including some children with profound and multiple disabilities. All staff are committed to working with these children as part of a fully inclusive programme throughout the school.
The school is set in nearly an acre of garden and operates the garden nursery model pioneered by Margaret McMillan in the early 1900s. There is a strong commitment to team work throughout the school so staff can support each other and offer the children a rich and varied, child centred curriculum.
